Mary Martin DeShaw

Since ending a fulfilling career with the University of California, I’ve become a passionate political activist and documentary photographer, picking up where I left off in my twenties. I am grateful to be a PBP affiliate because it allows me to support causes I care deeply about in a meaningful way using a medium I love. In addition to working for PBP, I have spent years photographing for nonprofits including SOAR for (foster) Youth, Habitat for Humanity, Alzheimer’s Services of the East Bay, Writer Coach Connection, Jewish Gateways, the University of California Retirement Center, the San Francisco Senior Center, and early in life, a school district that became a national example of how to successfully create a magnet school.

I’m also a member of Berkeley Fine Art Photographers and the Berkeley Camera Club, and have participated in initiating and implementing several photography exhibits. My work has been shown in Bay Area galleries including the 2020 “de Young Open” exhibit, the 2019 “Visions of Democracy” at the Abrams Claghorn Gallery in Albany, and the 2018 “Berkeley Aperture” at the ACCI Gallery in Berkeley. Other venues include Artworks Downtown in San Rafael, the Expressions Gallery in Berkeley, the Berkeley Central Arts Passage, the Marin County Fair, The Marin Society of Artists, The Lightroom in Berkeley, and the Gray Loft Gallery in Oakland.
