Jim Colton
I have been taking photos since I inherited a Voigtlander 120 film camera when I was 13. I set up a darkroom in the only bathroom in our family of seven people! I've been hooked on photography ever since.
I have a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Stanford and worked for 45 years at SRI International (formerly Stanford Research Institute) where I studied the effects of explosions on structures. Some of my work required a special camera that could film at one million frames per second.
I am very active in the Palo Alto Camera Club and have just finished my term as a co-president. I do volunteer photography for several nonprofit groups--the Palo Alto Art Center, the Palo Alto Library Volunteers, the Cardiac Therapy Class, the Canopy tree planting organization, the Cubberly Studio Artists program and many others. I am also active in Peninsula Food Runners that delivers left over food to those in need. I started as a runner and am now also helping to expand the organization.
I believe that Pro Bono Photo provides a greater opportunity for me to have an impact in causes I care about while allowing me to use my photography skills.
